Do not forget to pick up a palette and some brushes. We need 2-3 flat bristle brushes, middle size, a couple synthetics, small ones, also flat and one thin tiny synthetic with a pointed tip for the very small details.

Of course we need a medium, I am gonna mix dammar varnish, linseed oil and turpentine, the proportions you will find in the tutorial. You can also use any other one you like.

As the first part is called The underdrawing, I suggest having a graphite pencil and eraser.

Hi and welcome to my portrait video tutorial.Today I am going to show you how to paint a male portrait in oils on canvas.You can just watch it, hopefully get inspired and paint your own artwork, or you can paint alongside with me.

In this 9 hours long tutorial I show and explain how to paint a portrait of a young man, I explain each step from the underdrawing to finishing the very small details.

skin tones
lights, shadows and semitones
volume
anatomy of the facial details
construction of the head

The size of my canvas is 60x80 cm (24x30 in), of course you can use any size you prefer. I do not want to advirtise any oil paint brand so choose any you personally like, in this tutorial I am using Van Gogh oil paints.
