Hi everyone! This is the full 5.5 hours long video tutorial where I show and explain how to paint a portrait of a man in oils on paper. The short 1.5 hour long video is also available.
In this lesson I show how to start painting a portrait from scratch. I begin with a quick underdrawing, then move on to the next step - the underpainting, when it is done I let it dry and after that I make the most important part - the blocking in stage, when I am satisfied with it I can work on the last step - details. I want you to paint along side with with - so I have attached the source picture and the list of my art supplies - check them out! This lesson is a step by step tutorial devided into 5 parts: underdrawing, underpainting, blocking in1/2, blocking in 2/2, details. Part 1. Underdrawing. In the first part the artist shows how to make an underdrawing using a graphite pencil. Mostly Sergey cares for the right composition and proportions of the head. After the underdrawing is done it is not necesssary to fixate it so you can start working on the underpainting staright away. Part 2. Underpainting. In this part Sergey explains how to make an underpainting - the first layer of oil color using Gamsol as a medium and one oil paint: raw umber (Daler&Rowney, Georgian). Part 3,4.Blocking in. This is the main part where the artists explains how to block in using all the colors from the palette. This part is done during a few sessions. After it is done we let it dry for a few days - most likely a week. Part 5. Details. In the final part Sergey explains how to finish the painting working on the facial details, likeness, softening the transitions between the half-tones. |
