In this video tutorial Sergey demonstrates how to make a master copy after a famous dutch painter of the 17th century Anthoy Van Dyck.
Sergey uses oil paints and linen panel as the surface. The artist starts painting from a very quick sketch with a few basic lines over imprimatura that he made with tempera on the linen. After that Sergey starts darkening in the shadows and background with burnt umber, ochre and burnt sienna. When the shadows are quickly blocked in the artist starts to introduce white in the light areas of the portrait. This way he sets up the right tonal and color relationship. When all the main spots of light and shadow are mapped out Sergey begins to carefully work on the face: likeness, proportions, details. |

What Sergey demonstrates in this video lesson?
In this video lesson Sergey paints in many layers not alla prima. When the initial sketch is ready Sergey makes an underpainting and then blocks in the main colors of the face and lace collar. During the first step the artist makes as much as possible while the oils are still wet: light and shadow of the head and collar and background. When the paints start to dry (which happens usually within 2-3 days) the artist stopps working on the portrait and lets the painting dry completely (usually it takes up to 10 days). When the painting is dry and ready for a new layer Sergey oils it out preparing the surface for the upcoming layer.

How to work on the textures?
In this video Sergey demostrates how to work on the textures as well. The original painting by Van Dyck contains some pretty textured areas: forehead and collar. Generrally Van Dyck used quite a lot of paint on the light areas of the face and folds of the lace collar. Sergey explains and says how to build them up from bery thin layers of underpainting to very thick highlights of the forehead,
